RSPCA Inspector Gillian helps save distressed dog in canal

Click on an image to enlarge

An RSPCA supporter recently called RSPCA NSW in regards to a distressed dog that had found it's way into a nearby canal and was unable to climb the steep canal banks to get back out. Responding to the call, RSPCA Inspectors arrived and entered the canal to calm the weak and cold German Shepherd cross Rottweiler.

Once calmed and reassured by Inspector Gillian, the poor dog was carefully stretchered out of the canal to safety, toweled off and reassured with lots of hugs and pats. Unfortunately, however, the male German Shepherd cross Rottweiler does not have an ID tag on his collar and has not been microchipped by his owners, so cannot be reunited with his family. He is currently in the care of the RSPCA NSW.

If anyone has information relating to a male German Shepherd cross Rottweiler lost in the West Hoxton/Austral or surrounding areas, please contact the RSPCA on 02 9770 7555.

This story demonstrates the vital importance of microchipping your pets and having identification tags attached to their collars in case they become lost. Microchipping and ID tags are available at your local RSPCA Shelter - CLICK HERE for contact details.

SEA FM and RSPCA get painted for the Million Paws Walk!

On Wednesday 12 May, to celebrate the RSPCA Million Paws Walk, two RSPCA supporters will be getting their bodies painted during Paddy and Ciel’s Sea FM 101.3 breakfast show. “Sea FM’s Dan King and the RSPCA’s Deanna Douglas are enduring a couple of hours of body paint to look like Dalmatians,” said Kelly McCormack, Volunteer Coordinator for the Central Coast’s RSPCA Million Paws Walk.

“It’s going to be an early start. The guys have to get to the station for 5.30am for their body makeover, and then they’ll be hitting the road around 7.00am.”

Sea FM are huge supporters of the RSPCA and will be at the Central Coast event with live crosses, Sea Cruisers, and Paddy and Ciel will be also doing the walk. There’ll also be pet competitions including wiggliest tail, fancy dress, sloppiest kiss and owner/dog look-a-like, and a tug-o-war with the Patonga Rural Fire Service. The RSPCA also encourages people without pets to come along, with ‘Invisimutts’ (invisible dog leads) up for adoption at the walk. Everyone who adopts an Invisimutt can enter the invisible dog hurdle/egg and spoon race. With plenty of great prizes donated from local businesses, you have to be in it to win it!

Every year, thousands of people and dogs nationwide walk for a cause and celebrate their love for animals by taking part in the RSPCA Million Paws Walk. This year’s event is on Sunday 16 May and the Central Coast Walk is going to be lots of fun! From babies to seniors, Chihuahuas to Great Danes – it’s an event for everyone – two and four-legged.

Adopt a Pet Profile: Redmond

Name: Redmond
Breed: Siberian Husky Cross
Sex: Male
Colour: Red / White
Desexed: Yes
Age: Young Adult
Size: Medium

Redmond is looking for a home with an owner who has experience with this breed. He will need an active home with another dog to keep him company as he doesn't like to be in a yard alone. If his owner is home most of the time and will allow him inside to be part of the family, Redmond may be ok without another dog.

Redmond usually ignores cats but should never be left unsupervised around them. He is not suited to a home with chickens or live stock. He will need a 5ft fence that is colourbond and secure.

Redmond can sit, come and does walk on leash although he tends to pull when excited. He is very tolerant of all handling and loves to roll over for a belly rub. Even from total strangers! Redmond is suited to a Orange family. Must have experience with Huskies. His new home should have no pocket pets and supervision with cats.

To find out more about Redmond, please contact the RSPCA Sydney Shelter:
