Bruiser's Best Buds; Foxy, Female, Fox Terrier Cross / Small Terrier Cross

Wag your tails chaps, because it's Friday! Now get ready to wag them again, because you're about to meet another of my fabulous friends, Foxy! Woo, what a tongue twister, but she is totally worth it.

Foxy is one of my oldest friends, and even though her puppy days are behind her, this doesn't make her any less loveable. She is looking for an older family that are after an indoors dog that wants to spend as much time with her, as she does with them. Although she does like living the high life inside, she does need a short daily walk to keep her invigorated and healthy.

Foxy and I go way back, and have sorted our doggy differences out, so if your home has a dog already, they will need to come into the shelter to do the same.

Foxy absolutely adores people, almost as much as I adore my Elle, so would love a home and family she can call her own. If you're after a fabulous friend for life, then you can find and adopt Foxy from the RSPCA Sydney Shelter in Yagoona; 201 Rookwood Road, Yagoona, 2199, (02) 9770 7555

Legally Blonde The Musical and RSPCA NSW have come together to help find homes for Bruiser’s Best Buds.  Chihuahua star Bruiser may be in the spotlight, but he’s hoping to use his stardom to help highlight RSPCA NSW shelter animals in need of homes.  Bruiser’s Buds are cute and affectionate – some are even blonde!  But all of them are looking for love and can’t wait to find their forever homes.  Bruiser knows that adopting a pet is a long term commitment, and should be considered carefully.  Thankfully, expert staff at the RSPCA can help potential new owners find pets to match their lifestyle. Take-Me-Home Tuesday; Bella, Female, Bullmastiff Cross

I'm Bella - do you think the name suits me?

I came to the Yagoona shelter from the Dubbo RSPCA and I am actually quite a sweet and gentle giant.

I can sometimes be nervous so need a home with someone who has had experience with dogs before. Because I'm a large dog, I need a family that suits my higher activity level. This includes regular walks and training. I can pull a bit hard on the lead. I would really benefit from obedience training as I'm an intelligent girl and can already sit on command.

I enjoy meeting new dogs and would love to meet any of your existing dogs before going home with you. It will also be important to bring children in if you have any to meet me ,to see if the kids are ok with her size. Little children may not be the best as I can get nervous at times, so older calmer children would be best.

I will also need to go somewhere that has a nice big yard for me to play in and secure colourbond fencing all around. I am the type of dog that would love to be a part of the family and to join in family outings and to just sit on the couch and watch TV with you. You can find and adopt me from the RSPCA Sydney Shelter in Yagoona; 201 Rookwood Road, Yagoona, 2199, (02) 9770 7555

Caturday; Crinkle, Female, Domestic Medium Hair Cross

Good meow-ning to you! My name's Crinkle and I'm absolutely delighted to meet you.

I'm a super smoochy lady, that's looking for a super smoochy family to... well, be smoochy with! I'm not a loud lady, you will hardly hear a peep out of me unless I want some cuddles.

I generally look for the sun spot in the house and chill out, and at nights I tend to curl up in my hidey hole to keep warm and safe. I can get playful moments and will chase toys, so any little toys around the house better watch their backs. I'm still gentle of course :-)

If you're after kitty cuddles and kisses, then you can find and adopt me from the RSPCA Sydney Shelter in Yagoona; 201 Rookwood Road, Yagoona, 2199, (02) 9770 7555

Bruiser's Best Buds; Mickey, Male, Maltese

Happy Friday Friends! And what a fabulous Friday it is when I get to introduce another of my little furry pals, Mickey!

Mickey may only be a puppy, but he definitely has a lot of love to give. He is searching for a home where his new family can teach him all the things a little puppy needs to know, like sit, stay, wait, drop and come. Being a puppy, he still does a few cheeky things, but working together with your family like I do with Elle, will help get all those cheeky habits under control.

He is also super playful, with bundles of energy, I can hardly keep up with him! He will need plenty of toys to keep him entertained, maybe something in pink *wink*. He will also need a daily walk, but trust me, he likes to snuggle when he gets sleepy, so prepare for puppy cuddles after.

If my fluffy friend Mickey sounds like a dream come true, then you can find and adopt Mickey from the RSPCA Hunter Region (Rutherford) Shelter in Rutherford; 6-10 Burlington Place, Rutherford Maitland 2320, (02) 4939 1555

RSPCA Dubbo Volunteer Branch Seeks Members to Avoid Shut Down

RSPCA Dubbo Volunteer Branch President Rick Lean and member Carolyn Lean caring for two kittens that are desexed and ready to go to a good home.

The RSPCA Dubbo Volunteer Branch is desperate for volunteer members to join in the next few weeks. A minimum of five members must attend the Annual General Meeting on 12th September 2012, or the Volunteer Branch may be forced to shut down.

The RSPCA Dubbo Volunteer Branch plays a critical role in subsidising the needs of the Dubbo Council’s animal shelter. It requires volunteers to help fundraise thousands of dollars each year to help animals in the area.

“We require active members who are passionate about animals and can give as much time as they can towards local fundraising initiatives,” said RSPCA Dubbo Volunteer Branch member Carolyn Lean. “They also have to pay an annual membership fee of $30 and attend monthly meetings.”

Volunteer branch members help facilitate activities in the community for animal lovers. One unfortunate consequence of not having a local volunteer branch is that the annual RSPCA Million Paws Walk will no longer be on the calendar for the dogs of Dubbo and their owners.

“Having more volunteer members means we can organise and run many more fun activities for people and their pets – and in turn raise much needed funds for the local animals.”

RSPCA NSW is a non-government charity that relies heavily on volunteers and fundraising to be able to continue operating across the state. The RSPCA Dubbo Volunteer Branch is one of the twenty-eight RSPCA Volunteer Branches in NSW that need members to exist and run successfully today.

“We need your help to ensure we can continue supporting the local shelter and animals in need.”

For more information about how to become an RSPCA Dubbo Volunteer Branch member go to: http://www.rspcansw.org.au/services/rscpa_branches_and_shelters Email: dubbobranch@rspca.nsw.org.au or call: (02) 6882 7927

Take-Me-Home Tuesday; Jasper, Male, Alaskan Malamute Cross

Rrroooooffff! Hey there! Jasper’s the name, and playing’s my game!

I’m definitely a big loving furball, as all I want is lots of cuddles with my family. I also love love LOVE playing, whether it be with my family, with my favourite toy or with another furry friend. I can get a little overexcited, so can’t go home to a house with little humans.

I need to go home with a family that has had Malamutes before; it’s nothing personal, it’s just so my family completely understand me. I need one to two walks a day as I have lots of energy, and with all this fur I need a daily brush and a bath for when I get dirty.

If my gorgeous looks haven’t won you over, then my endless amounts of love definitely will. You can find and adopt me from the RSPCA Sydney Shelter in Yagoona; 201 Rookwood Road, Yagoona, 2199, (02) 9770 7555

Caturday; Kimmy, Female, Domestic Short Hair Cross

Purrrrrrrrrrr! Hi there, it's so nice to meet you! How about a cuddle? Oh, my name's Kimmy by the way.

I was definitely the affectionate one in the litter, always trying to get extra cuddles from mum and the humans in the house. Anytime you want a cuddle on the couch or on those cold Sunday mornings in bed, I'll be there waiting for you.

Although I'm a snuggler, I am still a kitten at heart and love my toys and scratching post. I love any and all toys, with all the bells and whistles, and especially love it when we play together. I'm not super keen on other cats though, so being the top and only cat in the house would suit me fine.

If you're after a cuddler, then you can find and adopt me from the RSPCA Sydney Shelter in Yagoona; 201 Rookwood Road, Yagoona, 2199, (02) 9770 7555

Bruiser's Best Buds; Daffy, Male, Kelpie Cross

Hiya all! I’m Bruiser, and I’d like to introduce you to one of my puppy pals, Daffy. Us little guys have to stick together, and I want to make sure Daffy finds a fabulous new family to call his own.

Being a puppy, Daffy certainly needs a family that will take the time to teach him all about the world just like Elle did with me. I remember learning how to sit, stay, heal and all the basic manners us gentlemen folk need. Although we are already friendly, Daffy needs to learn how to get along with all the other dogs and cats out there in the world.

Daffy is super friendly, super cute and just plain super! So if you want a Bruiser endorsed friend for life, then you can find and adopt Daffy from the RSPCA Sydney Shelter in Yagoona; 201 Rookwood Road, Yagoona, 2199, (02) 9770 7555

Take-Me-Home Tuesday; Samuel, Male, Australian Cattledog

Hiya! I’m Samuel and I’m just a young boy looking for a family to call my own.

I’m a very smart and active pup looking for my place in an equally smart and active family’s life. I love playing and socializing with other people and other dogs, whether it be bush walking, dog parks or a play out in the backyard. I definitely love the active things in life with all this energy, so need at least two long walks a day.

I'm pretty smart too, though not book smart, I can learn lots of obedience lessons and tricks. I pick them up super quickly, so it will only be a matter of time until I’m be up there acting with Lassie and Benji.

If you think your home could use a little Samuel smile, and feel like you have the energy to keep up with me, then you can find and adopt me from the RSPCA Sydney Shelter in Yagoona; 201 Rookwood Road, Yagoona, 2199, (02) 9770 7555

Cupcake Day for the RSPCA - Helping the Fight Against Animal Cruelty

Next Monday 20th August, RSPCA NSW celebrates their  fifth annual Cupcake Day fundraiser. Registered cupcake cooks across the nation will descend on their schools, workplaces and social groups with batches of delicious cupcakes made using cage-free eggs in exchange for donations to the RSPCA. All money raised will go toward helping the RSPCA continue the fight against animal cruelty.

The RSPCA is not a government funded charity. In fact, the animal welfare organisation receives less than 2% of funding from the government.  As such, the RSPCA relies heavily on fundraising activities like Cupcake Day and the generosity of the supporters to help raise much needed funds.

In addition to all the great community events across the nation in August, RSPCA’s Sydney Shelter in Yagoona will host a Cupcake Day stall over three days from Saturday 18th August to Monday 20th August. Shelter staff and volunteers will bake cupcakes and dog-friendly pupcakes for members of the public to enjoy in exchange for donations. At the same time, people can visit and adopt animals at the shelter in need of a good home.

The RSPCA Care Centre in Rouse Hill will also host a Cupcake Day event on Saturday 18th August, 10am until 3pm, at Civic Way. There will be a cupcake decoration station for the kids and a cupcake eating competition with great prizes to be won.

There are plenty of other ways to get involved with Cupcake Day:
  • Set up a Cupcake Day fundraising page and raise money online.
  • Spread the word about Cupcake Day with local media and social media.
  • Encourage colleagues, friends and family to hold their very own Cupcake Day event – it’s not too late register online at www.rspcacupcakeday.com.au or call (02) 9782 4494.
Monday 20th August is the sweetest day of the year for the RSPCA with money raised going to the operations and functions that allows the charity to exist today.

Caturday; Cassie, Female, Domestic Longhair Cross

Meow! I'm Cassie, and I'm a fine looking feline, if I do say so myself.

I'm definitely a pretty kitty, and looking for an equally pretty family to go home with. My looks isn't the only thing I have to give, I also have plenty of love for the right family.

I can be independent at first, but once we get to know each other I will definitely be all over you and looking for a little affection. I will look for a warm lap to curl up on during these wintery nights.

I'm not used to being groomed, but with all this hair I will definitely need some help getting it under control. If we take it slow and make sure it's a positive thing for both of us, I can imagine loving it.

If you just can't keep your eyes off me, then you can find and adopt me from the RSPCA Sydney Shelter in Yagoona; 201 Rookwood Road, Yagoona, 2199, (02) 9770 7555

Friday Find-A-Friend; Sasha, Male, Jack Russell Terrier Cross Australia Cattledog

Hi! Hi! Hi! Did I say Hi? Hi, my name's Sasha and I am absolutely delighted to meet you!

I'm a very energetic boy, which I get from my mum's Jack Russell side, or was that dad? I have plenty of energy to run, jump, play and generally go adventuring with my family. I'm very social and get along with everybody, including most dogs, although the big ones can be kind of scary.

I have plenty of love to give, and would love a family that has plenty of affection to give in return. If I do have to be on my own sometimes, I would like some toys to keep me entertained until you return. Another dog in the family would also be great to play with during the day.

All the rumbling and tumbling can make me a little dirty, so I will need a bath every few weeks and a nice brush to keep my coat looking healthy.

If you're looking for a loving, energetic fluffball to join the family, then you can find and adopt me from the RSPCA Sydney Shelter in Yagoona; 201 Rookwood Road, Yagoona, 2199, (02) 9770 7555

ANIMAL CRUELTY CHARGES – WINDSOR LOCAL COURT

Photograph taken on day of seizure, 5 October 2011

A local Sydney man appeared at Windsor Local Court for sentencing on Thursday 2 August 2012. He pleaded guilty to three animal cruelty charges to his nine dogs.

On 5 October 2011, RSPCA Inspectors responded to a complaint about a number of dogs in poor condition at a rural property in Box Hill. The officers located 19 dogs at the property and after examining each dog, 9 dogs were seized for poor body condition and/or veterinary issues.

The five adult Beagles, three adult Labradors and one Staffordshire Bull Terrier were transported to the RSPCA Shelter and presented to a veterinarian for examination. The veterinarian confirmed that the 9 dogs were under weight and had worm infestations with 6 of the dogs having ear infections. The dogs were provided with necessary veterinary treatment and placed on a commercially available diet and demonstrated weight gain while in the care of the RSCPA.

The man was charged with three offences, that being failing to provide proper and sufficient food to nine dogs, failing to provide veterinary treatment for worm infestations to nine dogs and a failing to provide veterinary treatment for ear infections to six dogs.

He was convicted on all three charges and placed on a Section 9 Good Behaviour Bond for 2 years with conditions that enable the RSPCA to inspect any property owned that he owned, four times a year for the duration of the bond. He was ordered to pay $14,163.88 in animal care costs and $5000 in professional costs.

Take-Me-Home Tuesday; Franco, Male, Finnish Spitz Cross

Hey there, the name’s Franco and I’m looking for my fur-ever home.

I’m a fairly quiet kind of guy and prefer the quieter things in life. I would much rather live with an older family, as my younger years are behind me. I do occasionally have my puppy moments and play with toys, but I prefer to just relax and enjoy the moments together at home.

I guess you could call me mister independent, because I like to hang around the house doing my own thing. Although I’ll pop by for a belly scratch and see how you’re doing throughout the day. I do like going out for a sniff and walk every day and will enjoy our time spent together.

At my age, I like looking after coat and keeping pristine, so will need a brush every few days, and a bath every month to keep me looking handsome.

If you’re after Mister Independent, then you can find me at the RSPCA Sydney Shelter in Yagoona; 201 Rookwood Road, Yagoona, 2199, (02) 9770 7555

RSPCA Investigates Animal Welfare Issues at NSW Piggery

22/8/12 - UPDATE: RSPCA NSW CEO Steve Coleman interviewed on ABC Rural NSW Country Hour  - http://www.abc.net.au/rural/nsw/content/2012/08/s3573440.html (download the transcript HERE)

6/8/12 - The RSPCA takes the issue of animal welfare very seriously and is currently working with DPI, NSW Food Authority, Animal Welfare League and the NSW Police in the ongoing investigation of a Southern NSW piggery.

On Friday morning RSPCA NSW received information about the alleged miss treatment of animals at a piggery in Southern NSW. RSPCA NSW Inspectors attended the piggery on Friday afternoon and commenced a joint inspection with DPI, NSW Food Authority, Animal Welfare League and the NSW Police. The RSPCA also received a link to footage that was allegedly taken at the piggery and will review this as part of its investigation.

In relation to the piggery, there is no legal mechanism under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act to bring about the immediate suspension or closure of the piggery. While there is capacity for people to be prohibited from owning animals, this order can only be made by the local court following the prosecution and conviction of the offender for animal cruelty offences. In the short term the closure of the piggery would also have an impact on the accommodation, feeding, watering and welfare of the animals that remain on the property. The RSPCA have issued directions to the owner regarding the ongoing management and welfare of the pigs and in addition to the ongoing investigation, it will monitor compliance with the issued directions.

The welfare of animals in NSW is protected under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (POCTA) 1979 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulation which are administered by the DPI and enforced by NSW Police, RSPCA and Animal Welfare League.

Caturday; Yuna, Female, Domestic Short Hair

Meow! I’m Luna, and it’s lovely to meet you :3

I am a pretty little lady looking for a loving home and family to call my own. Don’t let my looks deceive you though, as I still love to play. Sometimes I keep my eyes on the prize, or fluffy toy, and can get carried away, so will need a family that likes to play.

If I’m happy, I definitely like to let you know, so you may hear me singing during my morning bath or singing for my supper. I don’t mind cuddles, but I am definitely happy to venture out on my own when my family isn’t home.

If these beautiful green eyes and little pink nose are just too irresistible, then you can find and adopt me from the RSPCA Sydney Shelter in Yagoona; 201 Rookwood Road, Yagoona, 2199, (02) 9770 7555

Friday Find-A-Friend; Vince, Male, Terrier Cross

Roof! I’m Vince the Victorious!

Why Victorious you ask? Well, you will feel a sense a Victory when you realise that you’re about to meet a Very Vivacious Vuppy... er, puppy.

I’m a very active and playful kind of boy that loves walking one to two times a day with my family. I love getting amongst the action, so on those quiet days when I’m home alone, I like to have toys around to play with and keep me entertained. I like to keep my brain ticking too, so training together to work on my manners will help.

As I said, I’m fairly vivacious, and when I play I can get very excited, so will need a home with older children that are just as rambunctious. We will all need to meet, including any other furbabies, just to make sure we all get along.

If you felt a sense of victory while reading this, then come down and meet me at the RSPCA Sydney Shelter in Yagoona; 201 Rookwood Road, Yagoona, 2199, (02) 9770 7555
